What Causes Nausea and Vertigo?
The root cause of vertigo and nausea is a confusion at our brains “switchboard”. While our sense of balance is reporting motion, our eyes register stillness. This problem is exaggerated when you are in motion.
This sensitivity usually declines as we get older and in adults, it only appears under more extreme conditions, such as mountain driving around hairpins or in rough sea conditions. Fear can often play a part, intensifying the problem.
What is Vertigo?
Vertigo is the feeling or sense of motion or feeling of dizziness (i.e. rotation, rocking, spinning) when a person is perfectly still. You can induce this feeling by spinning around for a time – this type of vertigo only lasts for a few minutes at most. Alternatively, vertigo can also occur spontaneously or as a result of an injury and can last for long period; hours and sometimes days.
Signs and symptoms include a sense of spinning or moving, nausea, vomiting, nystagmus (abnormal eye movement) and imbalance. Causes can include, but are not limited to: migraines, inner ear infection, inflammation of the inner ear, head injury, medication, vestibular neuronitis (an inner ear infection that causes inflammation on the vestibular nerve - the nerve that controls balance), motion sickness, viral infection.
Vestibular Nerve vs. Vestibular System:
Among other roles, the vestibular nerve is responsible for maintaining the bodies sense of balance. If the nerve is damaged, it can cause acute symptoms of imbalance, sometimes including nausea and vomiting. Vestibular rehabilitation is essential to anyone suffering from nerve damage in the area.
Central vs. Peripheral Causes of Vertigo:
Central vertigo arises in the brain or spinal cord; head injuries could increase the risk of developing vertigo. Peripheral vertigo arises in relation to an inner ear problem, (i.e. an infection or inflammation).
