What is boric acid?
Boric acid is a white powder derived from boron and water that possesses antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. Boric acid is recognized as a safe, alternative, economic option that is a more cost effective option than traditional treatments. It is meant to be used vaginally, never taken orally.

Vaginal health
The pH describes the acidity or alkaline level of a specific substance. It follows a scale of 1-14, and the lower the number the more acidic the substance or environment. The higher the number the more alkaline it is.

Vaginal pH levels play an important role in determining whether it is healthy or not.

A healthy vaginal pH ranges between 3.5 and 5. This means that the natural environment of the vagina tends towards an acidic nature in order to reduce the risk of pathogenic infections.

However, if the pH of the vagina is disrupted this can shift the pH towards more of an alkaline state, which can result in an unfavorable environment that is more susceptible to the overgrowths of harmful bacteria and yeast. A higher acidic state in the vagina favors unhealthy bacteria growth and increases the risk of infections such as vulvovaginal candidiasis and bacterial vaginosis.

A shift in the pH of the vagina can stem from infections, unprotected sex, antibiotic use, inflammation, douching, injury, allergic reactions, and exposure to chemicals and toxins.

Signs and symptoms of an unhealthy vaginal pH may include a foul odor, abnormal discharge, itching, or burning during urination.

Vulvovaginal Candidiasis
Vulvovaginal candidiasis, also known as a vaginal yeast infection, refers to an inflammatory state of the vagina, also called vaginitis.

This condition is not rare as it is estimated to be the second most common cause of vaginitis after bacterial vaginosis. Vulvovaginal candidiasis is said to affect up to 75% of women at least once in their lifetime.

This infection is caused by a type of fungus or yeast called Candida and affects millions of women every year.

Signs and symptoms may include:

  • Vaginal itching
  • Pain or discomfort during urination
  • Abnormal discharge that may look thick and clumpy
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Redness
  • Swelling

Risk factors for these infections include pregnancy, estrogen dominance, use of hormonal contraceptives, high blood sugar or diabetes, immunosuppression, sexual activity, and antibiotic use.

If you are unsure if you have an imbalance you can use the PH Testing strips from Aeryon Wellness. These easy to use immediate, easy to use testing strips can help in determining an infection.

Though these infections are no cause for alarm they should be treated as early as possible to avoid any further complications.

Bacterial Vaginosis
Bacterial vaginosis occurs when there is an overgrowth of certain bacteria in the vagina which disrupts the normal healthy balance of bacteria.

Signs and symptoms may include:

  • Abnormal discharge that may look thin yellow, white, gray or green
  • Pain, itching, or burning sensations in the vagina
  • A strong fish-like odor, especially after intercourse
  • Burning during urination
  • Itching around the outside of the vagina

Risk factors for bacterial vaginosis include hormonal changes such as pregnancy or menopause, IUD, increased sexual activity, having new sexual partners, smoking, not using condoms, and douching.

As you can see the two infections are similar though they do differ. While they are both types of “vaginitis” , these two conditions have different causes and symptoms, and are typically treated differently. The main difference is that vulvovaginal candidiasis is a yeast infection and bacterial vaginosis is a bacterial infection.

It can be tricky to tell the difference so your doctor can help to assess which kind of infection you may be experiencing.
