What Are Excipients and Why Are They Commonly Used in Nutraceutical Capsules?

Excipients are non-medicinal ingredients added to a formulation to support the manufacturing process, improve stability, enhance appearance, or optimize delivery of the active ingredient. While they generally do not provide a direct therapeutic effect, they play an important role in ensuring the product is safe, effective, and consistent.

Common functions of excipients include:

Fillers or diluents: Add bulk to formulations when the active ingredient is present in very small amounts.
Solvents or dissolution agents: Help dissolve or distribute ingredients during manufacturing.
Stabilizers: Improve the physical and chemical stability of the product, helping to maintain potency and shelf life.
Dispersing agents: Ensure even distribution of small quantities of active ingredients throughout the formulation.
Colouring agents: Improve product appearance and aid in identification.
