Product info:
Canadian women make over half a million visits to doctors per year due to urinary tract infections (UTIs). UTIs affect 80 percent of women at least once in their lifetime.
D-Mannose is a simple sugar that occurs naturally in some plants, including cranberries. Nearly all infections of the lower urinary tract and bladder are caused by a few strains of E. coli bacteria called uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC).
The chemical attraction between UPEC adhesins and D-Mannose is their strength, but it also provides a point of vulnerability. If you can interfere with the binding of adhesins to the D-Mannose residues in the receptors of your urinary tract cells, then you can also prevent UPEC from getting a foothold for adherence and infection. The bacterial adhesins bind to the D-Mannose in their environment instead of to the D-Mannose residues on the cells. This gums up their pili and prevents them from hooking onto urinary tract cells. For a great majority of urinary tract infections, D-Mannose offers a safe, natural option with a simple, ingenious rationale, no known side effects, and a great reported success rate. Because insubstantial amounts of D-Mannose are used by the body, it does not interfere with blood sugar regulation.
Like D-Mannose, cranberries are effective in the treatment of the majority of UTI caused by E.coli. Two studies published in the Canadian Journal of Microbiology show:
Biointerfaces revealed that cranberry powder can inhibit the bacterium Proteus Mirabilis, a bug commonly found in complicated UTIs. The research, by chemical engineering scientists at Montreal‘s McGill University, showed that increasing the concentration of cranberry powder reduced the bacteria‘s production of urease, an enzyme that helps the infection to spread.
