Nettle: Stinging nettle is a commonly seen plant in North America. Several parts of the plant have been studied for their medicinal benefit. Nettle leaf has been used to decrease allergy symptoms like runny nose, watery eyes and congestion. It does this by stabilizing cells that release histamine, called mast cells.

Histamine is responsible for inducing the allergic response by signaling inflammatory cells to go to the mucus membranes. Nettle leaf is also used to increase the excretion of uric acid in the kidney and increase its transportation out of tissues.

This will help gout sufferers because it is the crystallization of uric acid in the joints that leads to gouty arthritis. Nettle root is used for prostate disorders like BPH. Components in nettle bind to hormone receptors in the prostate thus preventing the stimulation of the gland, which ultimately prevents the prostate's enlargement.

Sage: Sage is a small perennial evergreen shrub and comes from the Mediterranean region. It is now well known as a culinary herb; raw, cooked or dried, and as such is also commercially grown in the US, Canada, Argentina, Germany and France.

Sage has been used medicinally by ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. Egyptians used it as a fertility aid, while Greeks used it for its ability to stop bleeding and clean wounds, ulcers and snakebites. Sage was a sacred herb for Romans, harvested for solemn ceremony.

Research has shown that sage possesses antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and astringent properties. As such, it is now widely used to treat hemorrhoids, blood or phlegm in the urine, excessive breast milk or fluid in the abdomen (ascites). It is commonly used for colds, congestion and fever. Due to its antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral effects, it can compliment and support the immune system when dealing with infection. Research using sage for the treatment of Herpes have shown reduction in size, number, severity and time between outbreaks of both genital and oral cold sores. Studies using sage have also demonstrated a reduction in pain associated with sore throat.

Juniper: Juniper shrubs produce berries that are the principal flavouring agent in gin. Unfortunately there aren't enough of the medicinally active oils in gin to make it a form of supplementation. The most well known use for juniper is as a treatment for bladder infection. Juniper is a diuretic and antiseptic in the urinary tract. These properties are due to the volatile oils found in the berries. Juniper is also used relieve chronic arthritis and gout.

It contains bitter substances that cause the release of saliva and digestive juices when it is tasted. This makes it useful for indigestion and lack of appetite. Juniper may also be recommended by natural health practitioners for prostate disorders or swelling in the lower legs.

Juniper berries can be used as raw berries, dried berries, encapsulated berries, tincture or tea. Fresh berries must be harvested in the second year to get high amounts of medicinal activity. Much of the essential oil content of the berries is lost during drying so fresh berries or liquid preparations are usually the most potent forms of this herb. Juniper can be found as a component of formulas for urinary infections, arthritis and prostate disorders. If juniper is used as a digestive aid then forms other than encapsulated berries should be used so that the herb is tasted.

Mullein: Mullein is an herb that affects several body systems including the respiratory and genitourinary tracts. Its mechanism of action has not been well studied, but this herb is backed by many years of traditional use. Think of mullein when something is irritated whether it be the throat, lungs, ear, bladder or mind. In the respiratory tract mullein is used for dry hoarse coughs, which annoy the sufferer and become worse upon lying down.

This is usually seen as a lingering symptom of a cold or flu, or as a symptom of a chromic condition like asthma and emphysema. In the urinary tract mullein coats and soothes irritated tissue to relieve pain, frequency and urgency that is associated with urinary tract infections. It is also helpful for insomnia that is due to pain or irritation in the body.

Suggested Use: Take 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of Respir Solution morning and evening. For asthma and other chronic respiratory conditions take 2 tablespoons (30 ml) morning and evening or as directed by a health practitioner. Best consumed with fruit juice.
