What is Maskne? Plus prevention tips

“Maskne” occurs when sweat, skin oils, and bacteria are trapped on the skin while wearing your face mask.

Face masks can cause irritation by:

  • Physically rubbing against the skin, which can damage the skin’s protective barrier
  • Trapping moisture against the skin, which can cause acne.

o  This type of acne is called acne mechanica which includes any skin issues due to pressure, friction, rubbing, squeezing, or stretching.

To keep your skin happy and say goodbye to Maskne here is a skincare routine we’ve created.

Skin Care Tip # 1: Cleanse and Tone

Gentle cleanse and tone twice daily and exfoliate once a week that will clear pores of clogs and dissolve dead surface cells.

Product suggestions: African Black Soap, Viva Bio Foaming Cleanser, Evan Healy Tea Tea Cleanser, Antipodes Grace Gentle Cream Cleanser & Makeup Remover, Antipodes Antioxidant -Rich Gentle toner, Viva Amaze Exfoliating Gel, Mad Hippie 2 minute Polishing Mask

Skin Care Tip # 2: Moisturize

Apply to a good moisturizer to increase the barrier functions of your skin. Maintaining the skin barrier can help fight irritation and reduce the risk of other skin complications - acne and other skin conditions.

Product suggestions: Antipodes Baptise H2O Ultra Hydrating Gel, Antipodes Manuka Honey Light Day cream

Skin Care Tip # 3: Face Masks (for cleansing or hydrating)

Use Face Masks (the deep cleansing and hydrating ones)

Once a week you can also combine the effects of a pore-cleansing face mask (for example charcoal or clay face masks) and a highly moisturizing mask.

Product suggestions: Evan Healy French Rose Clay Mask, Annemarie Boerlind 2 in 1 Face Mask, Annemarie Boerlind Hydro Gel Mask

Skin Care Tip # 4: Extra protection

If the skin is already irritated, apply a thin layer of the products listed below to prevent further irritation.

Product suggestions:

Loa Botanical Beauty Elixir to help reduces breakouts, redness, eczema, and acne.

Evan Healy Neem Immortelle Purifying Oil, will assist the skin in de-congesting clogged pores, and reducing signs of redness and sensitivity.

Skin Care Tip #5: Clean your mask

The most important thing is to make sure that your mask is clean.

You can use a disposable mask or, if you are using reusable masks:
Wear a new mask as often as possible (we recommend at least changing it daily) and wash your masks often. Disinfect on the go with this new product: Natura Soft Sanitizer Solution

Dry the mask completely before wearing. Drying the mask completely in the sun is great (when possible!).
Remember, whether disposable or reusable face masks: always remove them by the ear loops first and fold the mask in half (covering up the part that touches your face. With reusable masks, store the mask in a plastic if you are out)

And our final word, do not wear make-up under the face mask, if possible, it is best to let your skin breathe while wearing the face mask. Make-up can also clog the sebum glands and pores, which would make blemishes worse. It is better not to use foundation for now.
